Five steps. You'll know the price at step three.
The same way every time, whether it's a window seat or a whole kitchen. Nothing is cut until you've seen the drawing and signed off a written price.
We visit, free
One of us comes to the house. We measure the space properly (walls, floors and ceilings are never as square as they look), check what's behind the plaster, and listen to what you want and how you live.
Bring photos you like, a rough budget if you have one, and any questions. There's no charge and nothing to sign.
Free · about an hour
We draw it
You get a scaled drawing of the piece in your room: the elevation, the sizes, where the shelves and doors fall, which wood and finish. It's how you find out before anything is made that you'd rather have three drawers than two.
Change it as many times as you like. It's paper.
You approve it before we price itA quote in writing
One fixed price, itemized so you can see what's in it: making, finishing, fitting, clean-up. It doesn't move unless you change the drawing. If we've misjudged something, that's ours to carry, not yours.
Nothing on this website is a quote; the written one is.

Made in our shop
Every piece is cut, joined and finished at our benches on Hartwood Lane. Solid hardwood frames and doors, cabinet-grade plywood boxes, joints cut to hold for a hundred years. Paint is sprayed in the shop, not brushed in your hallway.
You're welcome to come and see it on the bench before it's fitted.
Your piece, our bench
Fitted by the people who made it
The same two or three people bring it to the house and fit it. We scribe it to your walls and floors so there are no gaps to caulk, hang and adjust every door, and sweep up every evening.
When we leave, the only sign we were there is the piece.
Fitted, adjusted, swept
Small on purpose.
Hartwood is a workshop of three on Hartwood Lane in Springfield. We stay small so the person who draws your piece is the one who makes it and the one who fits it. Nothing is subcontracted or bought in and badged. The name comes from the lane and the hardwoods, not a family.
Real wood, chosen
for the job.
We buy from Ohio sawmills where we can and pick the boards ourselves. Painted work gets poplar and birch plywood; wood that shows gets the good stuff. No particleboard, no MDF boxes.
Also cherry, hard maple and live-edge slabs to order. Finishes: hardwax oil for wood you want to touch, waterborne lacquer for kitchens and closets, and sprayed paint in any color you bring us.
How long does a job take?
It depends on the piece and how busy the shop is. A window seat is a much shorter job than a kitchen. We give you dates with the written quote, and we tell you early if anything moves.
Is the visit really free?
Yes. We come, measure and talk it through. You get a drawing and a written price afterwards. There's no charge for any of that and no obligation to go ahead.
Can you match our existing trim and woodwork?
Usually, yes. Older Springfield and Dayton houses have trim profiles you can't buy anymore; we can make them in the shop so the new piece looks like it's always been there.
Do you do the painting, plumbing or electrical?
We do all our own finishing, including sprayed paint. For plumbing, electrical and stone countertops we work alongside your trades, or recommend licensed people we trust.
Can we come and see the shop?
Please do. Visits are by appointment so someone's free to show you round. Call (937) 555-0163 to set a time.
